As I think they are calculated in a great degree to invalidate Mr. Stutchbury's conclusions (with which, by the way, he commences his paper), I deem it necessary to trouble you with them : not that it is my intention here to draw any positive inferences, but with a view to enable the scientific world to form its own opinion as fully as possible upon the case as it at present stands, and also to excite attention to the subject, so as to obtain, if pos- sible, further information of such quantity and quality as will enable us to arrive at a decisive opinion upon the matter. In making these observations I intend, for the convenience of reference, to follow, as closely as possible, the line marked out by Mr. Stutchbury.
